Mountain Mamas Music Monday - the post-camp edition
What an amazing camp we had this weekend! I'm tired and still recovering, but am also riding a powerful emotional high from seeing this wonderful group of women come together and make a music community. We are so lucky to call you our friends.
Some of my favorite experiences at camp this weekend:
Playing "Hey Ya" by Outkast at our Friday night slow jam - unexpected, but so fun
Teaching Kimberly and Liz how to make biscuits for breakfast on Saturday (expect a pre-camp teaser featuring a biscuit-making video next spring!)
Hearing so many campers tell their instructors about how something in their class - a phrase, or concept - made a major impact in their playing, their understanding of theory, or even their perception of themselves. (Affirmations are the real deal, y'all.)
Seeing campers using their newly (and temporarily) tattooed arms to discuss how to use the circle of fifths and apply that knowledge to their playing
Hearing the whole camp slap and tap and knock and bend and strum along with Wendy Woo
Taking over a local bar with Mamas to see our friend and Mama, Janeen, play a show with her band
Playing with Emily, Bonnie, and Kimberly on Sunday when Emily chose to perform (for the first time (!) and on her birthday (!!)) Brandi Carlisle's "The Joke". An ambitious choice, but an excellent one that made us all step it up a notch.
Harmony singing on Sunday - I don't know if two times makes it a tradition, but I think we'll definitely want to keep this going on camp Sundays; it's such a powerful way to start the day and close out the weekend.
If you couldn't make it to camp this time, I hope you'll be able to join us in the spring. We've really got a special thing happening here.
Where to Go / What to See
Just wanted to throw these out there, 'cause I know I'll be going. Hope to see you there!
10/10 - The Songwriter Hour featuring Taylor Sims and Lauren Stovall @ Still Cellars (Longmont) - Don't miss this chance to see Taylor (a.k.a. Mr. Bonnie Sims) and Lauren (The Railsplitters, By the Lee) perform and talk about their music in an intimate atmosphere. From the website: The Songwriter Hour is performed and recorded with a live audience…The interview-style show will feature original songs from established independent musicians, along with a round table discussion and a Q&A section, where questions are fielded from the audience. The evening’s featured songwriters will discuss topics such as the songwriting process, melodic choices, and band dynamics with host Kyle Donovan. The two-hour event will also include a short intermission to allow listeners a chance to mingle and meet the artists in-person.
10/19 - House concert with Bonnie Sims (Loveland). We're hoping to pack this one with Mamas (including my own, who'll be in town that weekend!), so come join us! RSVP here.
A quick update for our campers - we'll be sending out an email with everyone's contact info and a Dropbox link for you to access (and add) camp pictures, videos, and materials. You should see something later this week (after Kimberly and I take a nap!) In the meantime, here are some of my favorite pics.
Have a great week!
