Mountain Mamas Music Monday - the curriculum edition

Good evening, y'all! I don't know about you, but I'm glad fall has finally decided to show up. Waking up in the dark isn't much fun, but I'm excited about digging out my warmer jacket and hat for the morning walk with the hounds. For me, those early morning walks have been great for songwriting (as long as we're not interrupted by other walkers, other dogs, bicycles, squirrels, or any other hound-exciting distraction) and it looks like there's even some science behind this. And of course, that quiet and creative time also helps us when we're working to make the upcoming camp an amazing experience for everyone!

Camp Updates

Kimberly and I have a stack of materials that we're consolidating into a new camp workbook. Don't worry, there will be plenty of theory and tips along with a handful of exercises and some easy songs for you to practice with! Campers will receive a hardcopy at camp and will also receive an online link to the materials afterwards, just in case you misplace your workbook (it happens!)

Also, we continue to work with our instructors to make sure we have the curriculum just right (there's just so much stuff we want to learn!).

Here are some of the highlights so far:

  • Playing by Numbers with KC - if you've ever been to a jam and are wondering why people are talking in numbers ("1-4-5"), then this is the class for you. Learn how to use the Nashville Number System and the capo to play easily in different keys and with different instruments.

  • Boom, Chuck, Strum with KC - don't let the flashy lead players fool you, if you don't have a solid foundation in rhythm, you can't make music. This class will focus on building your rhythm skills through the boom-chuck and other strumming techniques.

  • Soloing 101 with Bonnie - learn how to use scales and your ears! Whether it's your first solo or your hundredth, you'll improve your skills and have fun in a very supportive environment)

  • Beginners are Musicians, Too with Bonnie - Are you a person who identifies as someone who "wants to be a musician" as opposed to being able to confidently claim MUSIC as a part of your identity? Do you feel like you downplay your own desire to be great because you aren't meeting some expectation or you constantly compare yourself to others and get discouraged? Come to this class for a fresh start on the way you talk about yourself in your own head while you make music, because you are a musician, and you deserve to feel like one.

  • Songwriting for Absolute Beginners with Emery - Interested in writing a song, but have no idea where to start? This is the class for you! Learn some songwriting basics and co-write a song with your class - you might even get a chance to perform it!

  • Music Theory with Emery - Music is a language and the more letters, words, phrases, and sentences you understand, the more you will be able to express yourself and communicate with other musicians.

Really good stuff, right?

If you've signed up already, yay! Make sure you let us know if you have any dietary preferences and tell Kimberly your t-shirt size so we can put together your welcome kit. You can reach us at info@mountainmamas.com.

If you haven't signed up already, please do so! We expect to sell-out and early-bird pricing ends on Friday. Remember, we're having a beginners track this year, so tell or bring your guitar-curious friends along with you.

If you can't make it this time, we will miss you! Please make sure you're signed up for our newsletter/email and like our Facebook page - we'd love to see you at a future Mountain Mamas outing, workshop, or camp.

Ok, that's it for the camp update... Now onto other fun stuff...

Where to Go & What to See

If I can escape my house this weekend, there are some great shows happening nearby. I'd highly recommend Chain Station at Gold Hill - anyone want to join me for dinner and make the drive up the hill on Friday?

9/27 - Chain Station @ Gold Hill Inn (Gold Hill)

9/28 - Avenhart @ Elk Fest (Estes Park)

9/28 - Wendy Woo @ City Star Brewing (Berthoud)

9/29 - Kate Farmer @ The Tasty Weasel (Longmont)

9/29 - Poudre Valley Barn Dance (Laporte)

What to Watch

The Root: Choosing a Key to Sing In - In this edition of The Root, Murphy and Casey Henry from The Murphy Method show us how to methodically find the right key to sing a song in.

Have a great week, everyone!
